Searching For A New Job? You Need To Make Sure Your CV Is A Winner! 0
If you are currently searching for a new job then you need to get the basics right. You need to pay close attention to your CV (or resume) as the perfect CV is the thing that secures you the interview and provides you with the opportunity to really sell yourself in order to bag that dream job.
You will no doubt find plenty of people offering advice on how to right your CV but really there are no hard and fast rules. Just remember that your CV is your first opportunity to communicate just how valuable you would be to the potential new employer. Make it dull and boring and you will just blend in with the rest of the applicants. Make it too sensational and the employer may actually challenge your credibility and doubt your achievements.
The first thing you must recognise is that your CV must be up to date and factually correct. Never send a CV that was last updated two years ago. It looks both lazy and unprofessional. Take some real time out to write your CV. It is remarkable how many people think they can report on their career history by taking just an hour or two.
If you are applying for a similar position to the one you are currently employed in you need to really shout about your duties and achievements. You need to impress upon the organisation that you would fit easily into their structure and would require little hand-holding or training.
A serious job hunter should be able to produce a CV that is build around a combination of:
A) Their current and previous roles
B) Their career ambitions and where they (realistically) see their next step along the career ladder taking them.
You really do need to get the basics right, so make sure your spelling and punctuation is correct. Make sure you introduce yourself in a positive light and always state your address, date of birth and educational achievements (although for more mature applicants you don’t need to go into specific detail of the grades you achieved twenty or so years ago – for you, career achievements will be much more important).
In addition to your factual details write a couple of lines about you, what you do and what you want to be doing in the future. Words like “Hardworking”, “Dedicated” and “Motivated” are all great at catching the employers eye.
Keep your CV to a maximum of two pages (A4 size) and always send it with a cover letter of application. Never fold it, instead post in flat in an appropriately sized envelope and make sure you print it on a heavy duty, off white coloured paper.
Getting your CV right doesn’t need to be challenging, but you do need to give it the time and attention it really deserves.
